Hot on the heels of Indonesia and Laos, cultural worker Bian Huibin turns his lens toward Malaysia, Singapore’s close neighbour “across the water”. From the historic Straits of Melaka to the jungles of Borneo, from Ipoh’s limestone hills to Putrajaya’s rose-gold dusk, more than one hundred photographs continue the series’ “people-in-the-frame” philosophy: every scene carries the warmth of daily life. Between the Red Square’s playful children, whispered prayers outside the National Mosque, curry-steam rising in the wet market and the rustle of newspapers in an old Kluang railway café, readers can almost taste the heat and smell the spices of the street.

The camera roams both Peninsular and East Malaysia: kids dive off stilt houses in Sabah, a weather-beaten boatman strokes his patched sampan, construction workers and tourists share the same neon glow beneath the Petronas Towers, while a rural Chinese school keeps its lights on through a monsoon evening—a quiet testament to the resilience of learning. Bian skips postcard landmarks; instead he waits in the side lanes beside mosques, in the soft dusk before Maghrib, under the rubber trees rattling in the wind, to catch the gentle yet vivid faces of Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous folk.

Unveiling Southeast Asia – Malaysia is both a tribute to the country’s rich multicultural tapestry and a salute to the perseverance and kindness of ordinary people. With a silent shutter Bian captures the “temperature of Southeast Asia”: the thud of a durian dropping, the slow drip of latex—rhythms through which you can see and hear the land breathe.
The ten-book plan that charts all ASEAN nations is now almost one-third complete. The photographer invites readers to leaf through these pages, feel the genuine, radiant pulse beneath the tropical sun, and join him on the journeys yet to come.
